Agios Dimitrios Landforms & Tafoni

Cavity features called “tafoni” are located in the rock formations of Agios Dimitrios, just a few kilometers north of Meteora. On the surface of the conglomerate formations of Agios Dimitrios, erosion processes created large or small caverns in the rocks known as “tafoni,” or honeycomb structures. “Tafoni” are cavity features that develop in natural exposures of granular rocks. They have been created by the differential erosion of the rock surface. Τafoni are considered to be polygenetic in origin, being the result of a complex interaction of physical and chemical weathering processes, which include salt weathering and cyclic wetting and drying. The term “tafoni” is used around the world to characterize these distinctive structures of erosion found in sedimentary and igneous rocks.
